Vice-President of Research and Biological Collections of FIOCRUZ, with focus on research and innovation in health, he managed Instituto de Pesquisas René Rachou – Fiocruz for 31 years. Active member of the Board of Directors of Biominas, Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine of Universidade Nova de Lisboa, and member of the Scientific Advisory Board of Keystone Symposia. Biology graduate from the Federal University of Minas Gerais – UFMG, master’s degree in Biochemistry from UFMG, and PhD in Immunology by Johns Hopkins University. He has more than 300 publications of scientific articles in important congresses and internationally renowned journals, such as Nature, in addition to having mentored several master’s and PhD students. Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and the World Academy of Sciences.
